The feasibility study for the redesign of Hartmannplatz explores the potential of one of Brixen’s key urban spaces, aiming to reconcile high-quality public space, diverse urban uses, and climate-resilient design. Currently dominated by its function as a traffic node, the square holds strong potential to evolve into a vibrant and identity-shaping meeting point for residents and visitors alike. The study develops scenarios to reduce barriers, improve the integration of the square into the urban fabric, and create flexible, user-oriented spaces.
A central goal of the study is to strengthen Hartmannplatz as a social and cultural meeting place. Through a clear structuring of the space, consideration of existing and new uses, and optimized traffic organization, the square is to become more inviting and versatile. Particular attention is being paid to the connection to the old town, the integration of restaurants and markets, and improving pedestrian and cyclist friendliness.
The study examines strategies for climate-adapted square design in line with the sponge city principle. Unsealing, targeted greening, and optimization of rainwater management are intended to help minimize urban heat islands and improve the quality of life even on hot days. At the same time, it examines how existing tree structures can be integrated into the concept and supplemented with new plantings.
