Rienz Höfe, the result of a competition organized by City of Bruneck-Brunico (Italy), proposes a dynamic, mixed-use, and climate-resilient neighbourhood at the southern entrance of the city. Open, permeable, and closely connected its surroundings, the project forms a fluid connection between the city and the landscape, treating the sinuous course of the Rienza River as a guiding spatial principle rather than a metaphor.
Buildings gather around semi-private courtyards, the pedestrian network winds through the the neighbourhood like the river itself. Sightlines connect neighbouring districts, walking and cycling routes stitch together previously fragmented parts of the city. The Rienz-Höfe is not meant to be an isolated project, but a hinge between city and landscape, between mobility and stay, between old and new.
Shared gardens, flexible community spaces, and intergenerational meeting points form the social backbone. Private terraces and loggias extend living outward. The aim is encounter, planned and accidental. Ecological quality is not an add-on but a foundation: green roofs, photovoltaics, water management, and biodiversity corridors are part of the spatial logic. The Rienz-Höfe approach urban development as a collective endeavour and show that a city entrance can be more than just an address.
