With the project Vision Der Waldhof2, LIA is supporting the Mahlknecht family in the further development of their hotel in the village of Völlan, both structurally and strategically. The aim is to shape a place the next generation of hoteliers can identify with: one that gives something back to the region while contributing to the response to climate change and resource consumption. New approaches are being developed across food production and sourcing, energy supply, spatial design, employee management, and guest awareness.
The work sits within a broader shift. South Tyrol's tourism landscape has changed considerably over the past decades. Once sought out by a small circle of mountain enthusiasts, the region has, at certain times and in specific locations, become subject to overtourism. The tourism sector, and the businesses within it, now faces a real challenge: moving in a genuinely sustainable direction. This is not only about meeting evolving guest expectations. It is also about how our villages and village communities, our resources and our landscapes can be preserved, particularly in a time of climate change and growing scarcity — ultimately, a question of eco-social spatial development.
